Two of the most prolific and acknowledged expert writers on Mixed Methods Research(MMR), Professors Johnson and Onwuegbuzie, once noted: “a key feature of mixed methods research is its methodological pluralism or eclecticism, which frequently results in superior research (compared to mono-method research). Mixed methods research will be successful as more investigators study and help advance its concepts and as they regularly practice it”.
However, a decade and half since, we are still not sure how to successfully undertake MMR and its popularity is not well recognised by main stream research, Universities and top academic journals. Consequently there is a silent acknowledgment at some Universities that students should avoid MMR for their thesis project. Reasons given are: that they tend not to do it very well; it takes more time and skill; and students are better off using a mono-method (Quantitative or Qualitative) research. However, invariably MMR is suited to Action Research (AR) and as Johnson and Onwuegbuzie noted: “will be successful more …. and frequently will results in superior research as compared to mono-method research”.
