Participants in this course will learn how to identify and articulate workplace-based issues, to problematise and articulate their research problems, and to derive corresponding research questions and ensure that these are actionable.
Issue Identification, Problematising and Research Question Framing are essential skills that need to be developed through the doctoral journey to focus your work. The skills developed in this course will allow you to assess and resolve potential conflicts between the outcome expectations of the research (such as a wanted solution), the research problem faced (the actual issue at hand), and the research question that determines the focus and actions of the research and sets the narrative.
The course will provide hands-on training to allow participants to understand the difference between a problem as such, and a problem to you; and how to frame research questions in a way that they explore a problem instead of working towards random solutions. It will sharpen the notion of a possible solution bias, the wrong sense of urgency towards unclear and random actions, to understand what is relevant and what not, and to establish boundaries.
Participants in this course will:
1. Learn how to identify and articulate workplace-based issues,
2. Practice how to problematise and articulate their research problems,
3. Derive corresponding research questions and ensure that these are actionable,
4. Draw on the literature to identify and adapt research methods and instruments,
5. Build an understanding about the potential conflict between outcome expectations(such as a wanted solution), the research problem(the actual issue at hand) and the research question(that determines the focus and research actions).
