We will help you to identify and establish critical milestones for your research project and then target achieving these. Breaking down your thesis research into clearly defined chunks allows you to control progress, to work towards clear goals, and measure your achievements. We will support you in this through a combination of coaching and mentoring alongside the path of each of your research phases. With this, we can achieve each of the milestones together. As a coach we will allow you to discover and understand the different paths of the research cycle and to locate you and your work within these. This is important and very different to supervision as coaching is not about offering advice, but about allowing you to understand what is happening now and what will be next. This will allow you to become aware of obstacles and to overcome those, and thus reduce the risk of procrastination and drop out. To learn more about coaching you might also want to take a look at Rozenberg Quarterly’s book chapter 4 on coaching.
As a mentor we will facilitate and guide you through the critical paths of your research project. By definition a doctoral thesis is a unique and original piece of work and each doctoral researcher is expected to chart their own path. As an emerging expert, a doctoral researcher is expected to find their own voice, make their own decisions, be prepared to take risks, extend the conventions and to eventually outgrow their supervisors. And while you will have to learn these lessons yourself, we will be there to support you, allowing you to understand what is normal and expected and what is not, and to ensure you stay on track. To learn more about mentoring, you might also want to take a look at this brief article.
We offer coaching and mentoring alongside the path of each of the research phases. You can sign up for your coaching and mentoring support for each of your research phases individually. While ultimately each thesis research project is unique and comes with its unique timetable, an average thesis research project might be crafted and executed as follows:
|Issue framing, problem identification and the research question||Month -6||Identification of the existing issues, isolation of the research problem and formulation of matching research question/s.|
|Initial literature screening and identification of possible methodological approaches||Month -3||Initial screening of the literature to understand your problem area, including identification of existing studies in the field that could provide possible methodological approaches for your research project.|
|Thesis research proposal||Month 0||First full draft of the thesis research proposal, including Gantt chart, risk and mitigation strategies and ethical considerations.|
|Literature review and identification of boundaries||Month 3||Literature review targeted at understanding your problem area, including the establishment of tentative boundaries of what appears to be the research focus and identification of the methodological approach.|
|Operational research plan||Month 6||The operational research plan will clearly outline the research problem and research question/s, including their location within the existing literature; the methods to be applied in the research and how these will be implemented.|
